Nov 04, 2009 SqueeZe wrote an (almost) entirely non invasive tutorial for placing a USB IR receiver inside his Mac Mini. Reminds us of a certain hack a while back, but the objective was to get the IR.
Your Mac provides several tools to help you identify it. The simplest is About This Mac, available by choosing About This Mac from the Apple menu in the upper-left corner of your screen. The other is the System Information app. Learn how to use these tools to identify your Mac.
If you don’t have your Mac or it doesn’t start up, use one of these solutions instead:
- Find the serial number printed on the underside of your Mac, near the regulatory markings. It’s also on the original packaging, next to a barcode label. You can then enter that serial number on the Check Coverage page to find your model.
- The original packaging might also show an Apple part number, such as MGEM2xx/A (“xx” is a variable that differs by country or region). You can match the Apple part number to one in the list below to find your model.
List of Mac mini models
Mac mini models are organized by the year they were introduced, starting with the most recent. Click the model name for detailed technical specifications.
Mac mini models from 2012 and newer can run the latest version of macOS. For models from before 2010, the latest compatible operating system is noted.
- Jun 22, 2012 Mac mini (Mid 2007) Macmini2,1: MM11.0055.B08 (EFI 1.1) 1.3f4 (SMC 1.0) Mac mini (Early 2009) Macmini3,1: MM31.0081.B06 (EFI 1.2) With the exception of the MacBook1,1 and MacBookPro1,1, the SMC numbers don't ever appear to go down over time in a model family. The pattern, if any, in the EFI numbers is a little more obscure.

Are there any EFI or SMC firmware updates for the 'Mid 2007' Mac Mini? It's certainly possible that there were never any updates, but it seems unlikely that they had to update either the EFI, SMC, or both for most Mac models before and after this one. ...unless they just didn't care – it was the Mac Mini after all.
My Mac Mini is having some issues that seem to have been addressed on other models via firmware updates in the past (i.e. loss of responsiveness when connected to a Mac that is using FireWire disk mode, some other performance problems that I haven't yet been able to pin down using normal methods). My current firmware is reported as:
Model Identifier: Macmini2,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 1.83 GHz
Total Number of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 2 MB
Memory: 4 GB
Chipset Model: GMA 950 (64 MB shared)
System Version: Mac OS X 10.7.3 (11D50d)
Boot ROM Version: MM21.009A.B00
SMC Version (system): 1.19f2

P.S. If anyone from Apple ever sees this (unlikely), please consider adding MacMini2,1 to the list (even if there are no updates) so that we know the listing was not just omitted in error. It would also be nice (if it doesn't already exist) if there was a page listing the effective version numbers for all models (not just update numbers).
